RICHARD MADELEY has hit back over being branded “the new Piers Morgan” in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.

Richard Madeley, 65, has categorically shut down claims he is becoming the “new Piers Morgan” on Good Morning Britain. Several viewers have made the comparison since Richard took on a more frequent position on the show and his polarising comments often create a stir.

Most recently, Richard’s on-air views regarding whether politicians getting death threats is a “big deal” sparked uproar and one Twitter user, named Matthew, compared Richard to Piers Morgan “wrapped in woolly, comical jibes”.

Following the remarks, Richard fiercely told Express.co.uk: “I am part of a team, I am not, I repeat NOT the new or next Piers Morgan.

“I am me. I’m doing it my way.”

Richard has appeared on GMB since 2017, first as a stand-in for Piers when he was away.

Following the former host’s departure last year, Richard has taken on a more permanent role and steers the show on a rotational basis from Monday to Wednesday most weeks.

On whether he would consider taking on Piers’ old job, Richard states he already does “quite enough”.

He explained: “It’s not my full-time job, I’m there two to three weeks out of four, usually three days of a week.

“I don’t do it to the extent Piers did when he was on. I do it quite enough for me. I’m sort of semi-regular and that suits me down to the ground.”

Richard also gushed that he “loves” his predecessor and noted that he thinks they share a lot in common.

He confessed: “I love Piers, I’ve known him for well over 30 years. We went to the same journalism college, not at the same time because I’m a bit older than him.

“I wouldn’t say we are kindred spirits, but we share quite a lot of values underneath it all.

“He is a mate and I’m sure he’s going to do incredibly well in his next job, everyone’s going to be watching. He’s a real force of nature.”

oining GMB marked Madeley’s return to prime-time TV following the end of his Channel 4 show Richard and Judy in 2008. Before that, the couple presented This Morning from its inception in 1988 until 2001.

The presenter said that his new gig is right “up [his] alley” as he is a journalist by training.

He explained: “I started in newspapers 50 years ago, I spent most of the formative years in straight news then Judy and I got the This Morning gig and then we got the Richard and Judy show.

“GMB is there to break the stories each day, and that’s where I’m from. It is a very slick operation, it’s a very good-looking show, it’s got a brilliant team and it’s a privilege to work on it. I’m really pleased they asked me.”

It comes as Richard has lent his support to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s new FeBREWary campaign, which encourages people to host a tea party with friends to raise funds for life-saving research.

The charity is incredibly close to Richard’s heart, and he has been an ambassador for more than 20 years. He is urging people to get involved in helping “extend the life” of young people suffering from the disease.

Richard said: “The thing about Cystic Fibrosis is anyone can be born with it. It can be anyone in your family, it could have been you. If you just take a little bit of time to read about the difficulties, obstacles, and challenges that young people with CF put up with and overcome on a daily basis, you cannot fail to want to help.”
