The war of words between Piers Morgan and Labor politicians has escalated after the British broadcaster hit back at Kevin Rudd, suggesting the former PM was “spewing ignorant nonsense”.

Piers Morgan has railed against Kevin Rudd, savaging his “last humiliating tenure” as prime minister after the former Labor leader took to Twitter attempting to discredit the British broadcaster.

Mr Rudd joined a barrage of abuse towards Morgan following the British broadcaster’s 45-minute meeting with Prime Minister Scott Morrison last week.

The former prime minister then fired of a series of Twitter sprays targeting Morgan who hit back and said Mr Rudd was spreading a “total lie”.

“How did someone as clueless as you ever get to be Prime Minister?” Morgan said.

Morgan, who is set to host a new show on Sky News Australia in the coming months, doubled down and mocked Mr Rudd for “spewing ignorant nonsense” and criticised his controversial time in office.

“Hi Kevin, I won’t take bullying thug lectures from a bloke branded a bullying thug by his colleagues, nor will I take popularity advice from someone kicked out of office by the Australian people after less than three months in your last humiliating tenure as PM. Have a G’Day,” Morgan said in one tweet.

“Even got ex Aussie prime ministers now spewing ignorant nonsense about me. Most amusing,” he said in another.

It came only hours after Labor MP Stephen Jones was blasted from multiple sections of Twitter after slamming the photo of Morgan and the Prime Minister despite the meeting taking place almost a week earlier.

“Brisbane is under water, Lismore is about to be,” Mr Jones tweeted.

“SE NSW is bracing for a deluge. Ukraine is under siege… but sure… spend 45 minutes with a talk show host.”

But in an ironic twist of fate, Morgan revealed he had met with Labor Leader Anthony Albanese the night before his meeting with the Prime Minister.

Morgan also clarified he met with both politicians ahead of the Queensland floods and before Russia invaded Ukraine.
