Posting to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, Piers Morgan defended Adele following criticism regarding her ‘female artist’ comments at the BRITs in a sarcastic takedown

Piers Morgan has defended Adele after she faced backlash in regards to her statement about ‘female artistry’ at the Brit Awards 2022.

The 33-year-old songstress swept the awards show which took place at the O2 Arena in London on Tuesday night.

Adele took home the gongs for artist, album and song of the year for Easy on Me, with the ceremony broadcast live on ITV.

She wrapped up her acceptance speech for the artist of the year award with what has proven to be a divisive statement about ‘being a woman’ – which some fans interpreted as a swipe at the inaugural gender neutral awards show.

Concluding her speech, Adele said: “I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist, I do, I’m really proud of us.

“I really am, thank you so much.”

The comments were met with a mixed response from fans, with some arguing Adele was merely celebrating her status as a woman in music, while others deemed it a pointed barb at the BRITs’ recently rendered gender neutral category rule change.

On Wednesday afternoon, Adele was defended by an unlikely ally in Piers Morgan.

Piers deemed the criticism of the 30 singer 'absolutely shameful'

Posting to Twitter, the 56-year-old broadcaster branded Adele’s BRITs critics “absolutely shameful” and leapt to her defence.

Retweeting a story ran by US newspaper New York Post titled “Adele slammed for telling gender-neutral award show she loves ‘being a woman'”, Piers wrote: “Absolutely shameful.

“How dare @Adele have the brass-neck audacity to ignore gender-neutral bullsh*t and take pride in being female?”

He sarcastically added: “She’s clearly an evil TERF who must be cancelled immediately.”

Last month, the broadcaster criticised Adele for pulling out of her Las Vegas shows

The tweet follows Piers previously criticising Adele for cancelling her Las Vegas residency.

In a column for The Sun, the former Good Morning Britain anchor claimed the ‘I Drink Wine’ singer had ‘disappointed’ fans by pulling out of the scheduled shows at Caesers Palace.

Following confirmation she would appear at the Brits, he also cattily tweeted: “It’s a miracle!! (Bet the fans who paid all that money to go to Vegas are especially thrilled.)”
