NOVAK DJOKOVIC has given his thoughts on the Australian Open final after Rafael Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic has taken to social media to congratulate Rafael Nadal on winning Grand Slam No 21 after his epic Australian Open final against Daniil Medvedev. Heading into the New Year, Djokovic was the strong favourite to once again defend his title Down Under having not lost in Melbourne Park since 2018.
With Roger Federer also not competing, there was a chance for a different men’s champion in Australia for the first time since Stan Wawrinka’s win back in 2014.
That final was one of four finals Nadal had lost in Australia, but he wasn’t expected to get far in this year’s competition due to only just returning from a long injury lay-off.
Daniil Medvedev was the new favourite once Djokovic was deported and the Russian lived up to expectations with impressive wins over Felix Auger Aliassimie and Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the final.
But Nadal caused shockwaves in his side of the draw to reach his 29th career Grand Slam final and give himself his first chance of winning that elusive 21st major.
It wasn’t going to plan early on though as Medvedev soon opened up a two-set lead to put him in full control.
Nadal didn’t appear to have an answer for Medvedev’s dominance, until he somehow found an extra gear when it mattered most to win the third set.
With momentum, and the majority of the crowd, on his side, Nadal soon went on to win the fourth and set up a deciding set in what was quickly becoming an instant classic.
Both players were going for it in the fifth set and leaving nothing left in the tank as the pair looked out on their feet at times.
Despite the five-hour mark being reached, Nadal and Medvedev were both pulling out some incredible rallies to test each other to the max.
But it was Nadal who eventually found the breakthrough he needed before going on to beat Medvedev for the first time since 2019.
And Djokovic took to social media after the match to congratulate both players on a remarkable final
