The star insisted: ‘I’m not bitter about what happened but I do sometimes have a pang and think: what if my career had carried on a little longer? What if I’d released different singles?’

In 2016, Chesney told The Mirror about wasting his money during his heyhey: ‘Extravagant spending? Oh God yes – it was ridiculous!

‘Also, when you’re famous you have an entourage. We used to go out all the time in London, go to clubs – and it was all on my bill.

‘I was very generous about all that kind of stuff, you know? But eventually it just all went! You think it’s only going to get better and better.

‘I’d been spending way too much money. I wasn’t very sensible. I got to the point where I couldn’t afford to even pay the mortgage.’
