None of the current Top 10 players on the WTA rankings reached that milestone until they were in their 20s.
Last week, Coco Gauff very nearly pulled off a massive upset, leading Ashleigh Barty, 6-4, 4-2, and even holding a point for a 5-2, double-break lead in the second set, before ultimately falling to the No. 1-ranked Australian in three sets.
Some players might get a hangover from a loss like that, but not Gauff.
The No. 19-ranked American teenager has gotten right back on the winning track, beating a pair of Top 50 players in Adelaide this week—No. 49 Katerina Siniakova in the first round, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 50 Marta Kostyuk in the second round, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3—to reach the quarterfinals in the South Australian capital.
And it’s a milestone: it’s the 10th WTA quarterfinal of the 17-year-old’s career.
No one in the current Top 10 of the WTA rankings got to their 10th career WTA quarterfinal until they were in their 20s (the youngest two were Aryna Sabalenka and Garbine Muguruza, who both reached that milestone at age 20).
The most accomplished women’s player in the Open Era, Serena Williams, also got to her 10th career WTA quarterfinal when she was 17.
